While embracing the role of a debutante demands dedication, active involvement, and hard work, the invaluable rewards awaiting at the end of this path are immeasurable. Through a curated series of educational workshops, cultural events, and service projects, our Debutantes will acquire essential life skills such as etiquette, social graces, college readiness, and personal growth as they transition into womanhood.
We invite you to apply and join us for the upcoming Prevue season, where dreams take flight and young women shine brightly.
History
The term “debutante” originates from the French word “débuter,” meaning to make a debut. Historically, the Debutante ball served as the formal introduction of a young woman into aristocratic society. This grand event showcased wealth, impeccable manners, and beauty, with the debutante undergoing extensive training in etiquette, dance, and social graces in preparation for her presentation. The essence of a cotillion lies in its mission to instill respectful manners in young individuals, equipping them to navigate society with confidence and success.
In 1985, the Lambda Epsilon Omega Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. inaugurated the first DeKalb County Debutante Cotillion, specifically tailored for young African American women, as an annual fundraising initiative. The cotillion’s objectives encompassed scholarship provision, cultural and social training, fostering cultural awareness, teaching proper etiquette, providing educational and financial resources, and promoting community service. Over the years, this endeavor has resulted in the allocation of substantial scholarships to cotillion participants and grants benefiting the community.
In 2003, recognizing the need for sustained support, the Lambda Epsilon Omega chapter established the Forever Pink Foundation, Inc., formerly known as the Lambda Epsilon Omega Foundation, Inc., as a non-profit entity. The foundation is dedicated to enhancing support for participants and continues the rich tradition of presenting young men and women to society with pride and distinction.
